What is a discount house? what are the discount houses

Discount Houses

A relatively new development in the retailing business area, a discount house is a large store freely open to the public. They are self service and general merchandising stores and deal in a wide assortment of products of well known brands e,g. clothing, toys, home furnishings, sports goods etc. They sell their products at low price and operate in a heavily frequent but low rent areas. They buy their goods from wholesale and sometimes directly from the manufacturer and spend a minimum amount on premises, furniture and offer very few customers services.

Such retail Organizations developed after second World War and saw great prospect in a low margin high turnover type operations with limited services and big price cut. They cater to the needs of those customers who were highly price-conscious and who preferred low prices and few services. Such discount houses are also sometimes referred to as mass merchandised.
